My name’s Daniel Shvartsman. I’ve been investing since 2011 – over a decade now – and working in financial media since 2012. I’ve seen a lot over that time, I’ve learned a lot, and I want to share what I’ve learned with you in A Short Investing Guide.
Why a short investing guide
The biggest thing I’ve learned from the investing world, and from my friends outside the investing world, is that the stock market seems scarier than it should.
That financial media and professional investors and those of us following along at home get caught up in what’s happening today or tomorrow, and lose sight of the future, which is what we are investing in, the reason for all of this.
That investing can be challenging, hard, stressful, and risky, but that it’s a lot simpler than it looks. That it comes down to discipline, common sense, having an open mind, learning, and controlling your emotions.
That investing can be accessible to more people, should be accessible to more people.
So, that’s what A Short Investing Guide is. A flashlight on the spookier and more confusing parts of the stock market, an instruction manual for how to build your financial toolbox, and a road map to how you can put your money to work for you so you reach your financial goals.
My investing background
Here’s a little bit more about what I’ve done in my investing or financial media career:
- I worked at Seeking Alpha, a leading financial website focused on the U.S. market, for 8 years, developing and running many of the site’s subscription products or platforms.
- I worked at Investing.com, a leading financial website that is more global, for 1.5 years, integrating a professional news site we bought into the company’s global product.
- I’ve been investing since 2011, managing my own and some family members’ and friend’s portfolios over that time at different periods.
- Most of my investing is focused on stocks trading on the U.S. markets, though I have done some investing in European markets, and a little bit of bond investing. I invest in ETFs to help supplement my portfolios, but the bulk of what I’ve done is analyze and buy/sell stocks.
- I’ve hosted several investing podcasts, and currently co-host The Razor’s Edge, which is more focused on professional investing ideas.
- I founded and ran a podcast editing and production studio, Shortman Studios, publishing several podcasts on music, immigration, tech, and finance, as well as editing for several clients.
- I’ve consulted or assisted on several financial or investing businesses.
Who I am
And since we’re more than the work we’ve done, here’s a little bit more about who I am.
- I live in Valencia, Spain, and Ludington, Michigan, the latter my wife Amy’s hometown.
- We live with our two cats, Kupina and Pipoca, whom we took in from the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria.
- I’m from a family of four (two brothers and one sister) and grew up in Burlington, Massachusetts. My parents emigrated with my older brother from the Soviet Union before I was born.
- I’ve lived abroad for most of my adult life, including in Israel, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, and Spain.
- I love traveling, reading, writing – I still dream of becoming a published novelist – listening to music, playing guitar and a couple other instruments when available, and learning/speaking other languages.
- I am 5’3″ tall (160 cm, metrics folks), and got the nickname Shortman in college from one of my wrestling coaches.
